Beyond Elementary Was Made Just for YOU (and here’s why)

If you are a homeschool mom who feels that the emotional, mental and spiritual well being of your child is a part of homeschooling then Beyond Elementary is for YOU.

So why did I decide to create this blog for you?  Well…

You see, every week,  I am constantly messaged, called and asked by people to help with homeschooling, and I am the gal my friends come to when they need advice and encouragement about teaching their kids.

I have also taught kids music, taught at church and VBS, led women’s Bible studies, coached sports and led homeschool co-ops.  I regularly find myself in a position to teach and encourage.

Earlier today, a post I made in a homeschooling group offering help to other homeschool moms had just reached about 300 comments, and as I got off a call with yet another mom who wants me to help her figure out how to set up a learning path for their daughter it just clicked…

“I should start a blog to help other homeschooling moms!”

(This may have also been prompted by a number of people asking me over the years why I wasn’t writing a homeschool blog.)

Homeschooling is not just for those weird, unsocialized people anymore(it never really was), and now, more than ever, people need help with implementing a learning plan for their kids.

So, I decided to go all in and help as many mamas as I can. Let me explain what I feel I can help you best with.

But, first…

Why do so many homeschool moms like you need my help?

Let me tell you a story…

“What do you remember from school?”  I asked my husband one night after spending several months planning(ok, obsessing and worrying over) the next year’s curriculum.

My oldest was heading into junior high and I was sure that if I didn’t get it “right”, my son would be a failure and my husband would blame me the rest of our lives.

“Ummm….. chapel?” he replied.

Cue stunned mom.  “Uh, seriously?!”

“Well, I remember some books I read and playing basketball.”

Oh.  My.  Word.

Stop.  Hold up.  Wait a minute.

I have been freaking out over school curriculum, losing sleep- let’s be honest, losing my mind for months and he remembers chapel!

This is a guy who was an amazing student and has his teaching credential, and is a semester away from obtaining his masters.

I needed to rethink things.  What did my kids actually need to know by the time they graduated from high school?

We were in a season of a LOT of expectations from me and a LOT of tears from them.  Something had to give.

My baby and my 4 year old daughter were also being brushed aside when they wanted attention as I constantly reminded them, “Mommy needs to teach school right now.”

Things were a mess.

I don’t want you to be in that place.  I don’t want you to feel like you can’t do it.  I know that feeling and it’s not fun.

So, why did I end up there?  Because all I knew when I started homeschooling was that I felt that it would be the best environment for my kids.  I knew that I loved them more than anyone else on earth and I had their best interests at heart.

Many homeschooling mamas out there are in this same position.  I know, because I am helping them all the time!

That’s a great place to start, but at some point you have to come up with a plan.  You need an educational philosophy that will guide your plan, and you need a goal to shoot for as you create and implement your plan.

Beyond Elementary was designed for homeschooling moms who want to go beyond the basics.

What does that mean?  Well, I am sure we could recreate a classroom in our homes and try to stuff our kids full of everything they “need to know” so they can go off into the world and be successful, but since the current system isn’t doing that so well, we are left with a lot of questions and not a lot of answers.

I tried “stuffing them full” of all the basics and it was miserable.

But, you can go beyond the basics, beyond elementary, in order to give them a fully rounded education that looks something like this:

  • You can create an environment that not only prepares your children for college, but prepares them for lifelong learning and independence.
  • You can help disciple them and prepare them spiritually.
  • You can deepen family relationships and have closeness that lasts your whole lives.

Doesn’t that sound wonderful?!

I am going into my 9th year of homeschool, and I can tell you, the journey of homeschooling isn’t cookie cutter, and it will take some tweaking here and there as time goes on, but you CAN get to where you want to go.

It’s not as hard as it may seem.

I know… it sounds a bit vague on exactly how you achieve this goal, but I promise, it is easier than it seems and I am here to help you get there.

In this blog, I will cover learning styles, curriculum reviews and teaching methods on how to have the learning experience that works best for you and your family as you go through this homeschooling journey together.

There will also be giveaways and free resources, because we all love the free stuff!

I will share what has worked for me, as well as other moms, so you can get the help you need to make your homeschooling dreams come true!

With All My Love,

Sarah Beth
